Flooring Estimate Checklist: What the Square Footage Leaves Out

Prepare room measurements, transitions, floor-condition notes and material decisions for a clearer flooring estimate.

List connected spaces

Approximate square footage is a useful starting point. Also identify closets, doorways, hallways and changes to adjoining flooring. Photos of these transitions help explain details that an area total alone does not show. Note the rooms that should remain unchanged.

Discuss existing conditions

Tell the installer about uneven areas, loose sections or known moisture concerns. Ask whether the proposal includes removal, disposal and preparation. Those tasks can differ substantially between homes even when the same new flooring is selected.

Compare products with their requirements

Bring information about the product you are considering and say whether it has already been purchased. Material suitability and installation instructions should be reviewed for the actual space. Avoid assuming every laminate or other floor covering behaves the same way or has the same preparation requirements.

Record responsibilities at the edges

Confirm who moves furniture and appliances, supplies material and handles baseboards and transitions. If painting or trim work will follow, discuss the sequence. Before accepting, make sure the proposal names the rooms and clearly distinguishes included work from optional improvements.
